I started knitting the first sleeve of my lace cardigan, but it's slow going what with getting back to our learning routine this week and having two birthdays to celebrate. My son Zach will be nineteen tomorrow and my daughter Amy will be sixteen on Saturday.

I started reading Sarah Ban Breathnach's Simple Abundance Daybook again. Lots of daily encouragement there. I'm almost finished reading Never Trust A Pirate, by Anne Stuart and cannot recommend it. Quite honestly, I'm pretty much done with the whole romance genre. I like love stories, but today's romance offers little more than violence and lust wrapped in a pretty feminine cover. In Never Trust A Pirate, the hero slugs the heroine on the chin, delivering a knock out punch--for her own good. (There is constant verbal and physical combat between the couple throughout the book.) I find it disturbing that in 2014 women are writing these kinds of stories for other women. The other book I am reading is about how Christianity spread throughout the western world. I have to read it in small bites, but it is quite interesting.

  1. Slow and steady... I think your cardigan is going to be really lovely. Such a bummer on the romance novel. I used to devour romance books and then stopped, maybe for that reason? Lately I've been thinking about going back and reading one of my favorite authors again; I always enjoyed Kathleen Woodiwiss. Happy birthday to the "kiddos."

  4. I love the lace sleeve you are working on, what pattern are you using?
Two birthday's in one week? How fun, that means lots of cake and everyone knows there are no calories in birthday cake ;)
PS- I'm glad you liked the cereal, it has become a favorite here, I just wish it wasn't so expensive.

  6. I totally agree with you about most romance fiction. But I'm suddenly thinking about Elizabeth Goudge, who wrote a long time ago, but I want to recommend "A City of Bells", Susan! Look for it. It had a magical effect on me. Have you heard of her? "Green Dolphin Street" is her most famous, I think.
