On A Perfect Morning

The sky is endlessly blue and the world so bright that the roses, the stone wall, even the grass seem more vibrant today, shining. The trees and feeders are filled with such a variety of cheerful singers; it is impossible not to smile. This day begs for an adventure, and I am wondering where I should go: to the woods? to the sea? to a town filled with little shops?

For breakfast I made Sarah's perfect scone recipe. I added blueberries and served them with a generous helping of whipped cream. Ymmy!

Last night, I stayed up late reading a book that has completely captured my imagination:  Letters from Skye, by Jessica Brockmole. I won't tell you a thing about it, so as not to spoil it, other than it is a love story told entirely through letters. It is the best thing I've read a in a while--so well written, with deep, interesting characters and a compelling story which spans WWI and WWII.

Letters. ♥ I have a deep love of written correspondence, of paper and ink and envelopes and postage stamps. I had a close pen friend for six years. We exchanged hundreds of letters, sharing stories, recipes, sewing and knitting patterns, philosophical discussions, field observations, everything. People change over time. Our needs changed, and those beautiful years of correspondence came to an end. But, oh, I do miss sending and receiving letters and the special connection with a constant pen friend.

  1. we are headed the the ocean ourselves in a few days, so that's my vote for the perfect day! those scones look wonderful. i can imagine another kind of perfect morning spent in the blueberry fields. or another baking up and enjoying those scones! i guess it's not a matter of choosing. you can have them all. but they won't all be today.

have a wonderful day, however it's spent!

  3. That scone looks so good. Mike loves scones. . . I had penpals for a time, but they never wrote as enthusiastically back to me.

    1. If you decide to try this scone recipe, I would suggest adding more butter. I think 50 grams (1/2 stick) might be a mistake. For 3 cups of flour, it seems to me that the right fat ratio would require 1 1/2 sticks or 3/4 cup of butter.
