Maybe I do have a favorite season. Maybe it's right now at "the place where summer and autumn meet" (as my dear friend Brandy put it). Sunday was Mass, a trip to the farmer's market, and a walk through meadow and woods. I'm reading Emily of New Moon, by L.M. Montgomery and getting ready to cast on for this hat.
I sat outside this morning in the late summer sunshine making plans for the autumn months: new things to learn, places to go, things to make and do. And a list (blessedly short!) of things that we need for the season ahead: clothing items, jackets, a few "school" supplies.
A very long time ago I read in Karen Andreola's then brand new book A Charlotte Mason Companion that Charlotte Mason believed every child needs three things each day: something or someone to love, something to do, and something to think about. That quote has stuck with me through the years. I think it applies to people of all ages--not just children. To those three I would add: prayer, time outdoors, and singing. What would your list look like?
I treasured Karen's book for many years, and that particular quote guided my homeschooling. But I have grew my own list from the things which I find most important in life -
ReplyDeletenourishment of body and spirit

knowing they are loved
connection with the Divine

Lol, sorry - I am writing at the library, and they've just had Music Time with the toddlers. The noise was appalling (libraries are no longer a quiet place) and left me woozy. I of course have a better grasp of grammar than to say "have grew"!
DeleteI agree with your three main needs:someone to love, something to do, and something to think about. What would I add? well I think "the arts" are important-writing, drawing, singing, playing an instrument. I am glad that my children had lessons in piano and it gives them a form of expression when words fail.
ReplyDeleteYour list is perfect as it is; it encompasses everything. I also read the first Emily book recently, and am wanting to get the second.
ReplyDeleteThanks for "following" me on tumblr, Susan! xoxo
That list -- so simple and right on target. The only thing I would add is movement. Gentle or vigorous depending on circumstances and temperament at the time. Lovely photos, as always.
